Wrapped holiday gifts
The Ultimate Guide

How a Yankee Swap Exchange Works

The steal-worthy gift exchange that turns any holiday party into an unforgettable event.

What Is Yankee Swap?

Yankee Swap is New England's beloved holiday gift exchange tradition. Everyone brings one wrapped gift, draws a number, and takes turns choosing to unwrap a new present or steal one that's already been opened. It's the same steal-worthy fun — just with a Northeast twist.

It's the perfect icebreaker for office parties, family gatherings, and friend groups — no matter what you call it.

How to Play

1

Set a Budget

Agree on a price range before the party — $15–$25 is the sweet spot for most groups. Keeping it tight makes the game fair and forces creative gift choices.

2

Everyone Brings a Wrapped Gift

Wrap it well — mystery is half the fun. No name tags on the outside. The more ambiguous the shape, the better.

3

Draw Numbers

Each player draws a number to determine their turn order. Number 1 goes first, and — with a twist — also gets the final move of the game.

4

Unwrap or Steal

On your turn, you can either pick an unwrapped gift from the pile or steal any previously opened gift from another player. The person who gets stolen from then picks a new gift or steals from someone else.

5

The Stealing Limit

A gift can only be stolen a set number of times — typically 3. Once a gift has been stolen that many times, it's "frozen" and safe for good. This keeps the game moving and prevents the same gift from bouncing around all night.

6

Player #1 Gets Last Pick

After everyone has taken their turn, Player #1 gets one final chance to steal any gift in play — or keep what they have. Then the game ends.

The Variations

Same spirit, different names. Here's how the most popular versions compare.

Most Popular

White Elephant

The classic. Played nationwide, it typically leans into gag gifts, quirky finds, and the thrill of the steal. The "white elephant" name comes from the idea of giving away an unwanted, burdensome gift — though the best versions are anything but.

Dirty Santa

Functionally identical to White Elephant, but the name leans into the mischievous, stealing aspect of the game. Popular across the South and Midwest, Dirty Santa often comes with more competitive stealing and louder reactions.

Yankee Swap

The Northeast's version of the game. Yankee Swap is often played with a higher budget and slightly more serious gifts. The rules are nearly identical — draw numbers, unwrap or steal, freeze after 3 steals.

Secret Santa

A different game entirely. Each participant is secretly assigned one other person to buy a gift for. No stealing, no number drawing — just one thoughtful, budget-capped gift per person. Great for smaller, closer groups.

Tips for Picking a Great Gift

  • 🎭
Lean into the gag. Funny, absurd, or oddly specific gifts spark the most energy. Think "heated butter knife" or "Nicolas Cage sequin pillow."
  • 🙌
Universally usable wins steal wars. Candles, snack baskets, gift cards, and games get stolen most because everyone wants them.
  • 🎁
Wrap it beautifully — or terribly. An impeccably wrapped box or a suspicious garbage bag both generate buzz. Boring wrapping gets ignored.
  • 🚫
Avoid overly personal gifts. Cologne, clothing, or anything size-dependent rarely lands well in a mixed group of strangers.
  • 💰
Respect the budget. Showing up with a $5 gift when everyone else spent $25 is a buzzkill. Showing up with a $100 gift makes everyone else feel bad.
